Thank you for these reflections on the broader significance of AI. I tend to agree that AI can never replace the core purposes of liberal education, and therefore might help to draw attention to them again. On the other hand, if AI is perceived as a triumph of a "techno-utopian perspective where transhumanism is the answer to everything," this may in itself further diminish interest in the liberal arts. Also, as you note, the constituency for the liberal arts is in part determined by people's ability to support themselves and find both leisure and the inspiration to employ it well. If AI helps to advance a technocratic oligopoly, leisure and inspiration may be even harder to come by for most citizens. But as Tocqueville noted, we do have choices to make - so thanks again for helping to illuminate ours!

Chat GPT and the Bing Bot are tremendous aids to education! They can be used anywhere and anytime for quick information to questions that arise while reading that used to require a dictionary or encyclopedias, even libraries. Indeed, AGI could replace teachers -- and already is -- for the content material that can be used on true/false and multiple-choice tests. But the art of living a meaningful life needs guidance from someone directly engaged with reality and not just factual information.
