Your review encourages me to read this book. A history of ideas is essential to understanding any subject in its current form, including political philosophy. I wonder, though, if modern secular political theories -- beginning with Hobbes that are not based in the transcendent (or the metaxy even) -- lead to "an inevitable descent into totalitarianism." Can't an orientation towards the common good through rational dialogue and compromise in a constitutional republic keep that from happening? I suppose we will find out in the aftermath of the 2024 election.
