Solzhenitsyn wrote an extensive pre-Revolution history in which he documents how the anarchists and revolutionaries blocked political and economic reforms the Czar tried to implement because they knew that, if implemented, they would weaken the revolutionary cause. Also, Russian Orthodox priests have cited the very poor state of the church in the 19th Century, with uneducated, impoverished priests and rampant alcoholism.

I have never tried to learn about Russian history, leaving a big gap in my understanding. This was an extremely helpful overview.
